Selestina theater poster

Our new theater poster design for Yugoslav Drama Theater in Belgrade, Serbia's and Grad Theatre City Budva, Montenegro production of Selestina (La Celestina) written by Fernando de Rojas in 1499. La Celestina is considered to be one of the greatest works of all Spanish literature, and is regarded as the beginning of the renaissance in Spanish literature.

Refugees 1960

Quite a few years ago I bought this very uncharacteristic original form Ronald Searle. The art shows people picking clothing at a refugee camp in Greece in 1959. Not knowing the background story, I think I was interested in this particular piece of art because of the piles of clothing and shoes which obviously once belonged to someone.

Recently I found out about a book in which this art was published. Timely enough, the book is titled Refugees 1960: A Report in Words and Drawings by Kaye Webb and Ronald Searle. 

Flipping through the book I was totally flabbergasted to discover that the person in the foreground is Veljko Markofski, a newly arrived refugee from Yugoslavia.

Life is a small place.





 

Mirko i Slavko

Some of my viewers complain that I don’t post enough Mirko. I am doing this to please you and I will even toss in some Slavko. For those of you who are not from former Yugoslavia have no idea what I am talking about. I am talking about the fictitious comic characters, Mirko and Slavko. It was a propaganda comic, aiming towards the youth, drawn by Desimir Žižović "Buin", that started comics in 1958 and ended in 1979.

Mirko and Slavko were two partisan couriers that fought against Germans during the Second World War. By the amount of Germans they killed in the comics, I have no idea why the war lasted so long.

Novum Magazine Cover

Gebrauchsgraphik / Novum Magazine was first published in 1924 and is one of the oldest running graphic design magazines to date. For their 95th anniversary birthday Novum decided to ask 6 designers to reinterpret one of the 1,000 covers that have been published between 1924 and now. I was honored to be one of those designers. 

I chose issue number 2 from 1924. The theme of the issue was tobacco and design. That particular issue was full of very kitschy gold foil stamped, ‘tipped-in' labels. Which was in total contrast with the “George Grosz-like” whimsical cover.
