The Alpina Gstaad

The Alpina Gstaad, a Swiss hotel, opened on December 1st and instantly became a European landmark. It is probably one of the most expensive hotel projects.

Yona Lee Design and Mirko Ilic Corp. created graphic designs for the hotel.

Diplomat

Diplomat is a sixty-four-year-old periodical catering
to 162 foreign embassies in London.
The magazine is art directed by Jeannine Saba.

As part of its anniversary celebration, they have created an exhibition to display selected covers from past issues. Among them is my cover.

The exhibition will be opening on December 5th,
in London at the Chris Beetles gallery.

One by One

The new book One by One, published by Hesign (Germany), edited and designed by Jianping He, includes some of our work.

Tokyo Type Director's Club Vol. 21

We just received the Tokyo TDC Vol. 21.
In the book is featured our poster for a jazz
concert at Lincoln Center.

Dirty Theatre

Friend of mine and amazing Croatian graphic designer, Dejan Dragosavac Ruta, notified me of "Someday All the Adults Will Die": Punk Graphics 1971—1984, a show which just opened at the Hayward Gallery Project Space in London. 

Included in the show is one of my first record cover designs for the Croatian punk band Prljavo Kazaliste (Dirty Theatre), from 1979.

SOS Design Festival

SOS Design Festival / Students Organizing Sarajevo Design Festival is the first design festival in Sarajevo, initiated and organized by the students of graphic and product design from the Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo. It's happening between October 31st through November 4th. I have been invited to lecture and help run a workshop. See you there.

The Fine Print

Portfolio, imprint of Penguin Group, just published
the book The Fine Print by David Cay Johnston.
Johnston is New York Times bestselling author of
Free Lunch and Perfectly Legal (both illustrated by me)
and a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter.

The book is art directed by Joseph Perez.

Vets and Crime

This week Huffington Post published my illustration in their weekly iPad magazine. The story is titled "Vets and Crime", and below is a brief of the story.

For those who commit crimes or break the rules, the military just systems can be unforgiving. offenders are punished, locked up or thrown out. Military courts, by and large, do not recognize the idea of rehabilitation.  With growing numbers of troops acting out the violent anger and reckless behavior from combat trauma, this is becoming a bigger problem. Already, there are are 17,000 active-duty soldiers in legal trouble and awaiting court martial or unceremonious discharge.

First Portfolio

New Print Magazine competition, "Portfolio Review", will be judged by Natasha Jen, Debbie Millman, Scott Stowell, Jessica Walsh, and I.
For this occasion, we were all interviewed by Print Magazine about our first portfolios.

My first assigned U.S. illustration for The New York Times Book Review, 
art directed by Steven Heller. It was published in April 1986, to accompany an article 
titled "Burning Houses."

Print: The International Issue

The new International Issue of Print Magazine (October 2012) features an except adapted from Print's new monograph Mirko Ilic: Fist to Face by Dejan Krsic.
The article is about my designs for the covers of the Croatian political weekly Danas from 1982 to 1985.

The book is scheduled to be released in October.

Celebrate 65

To celebrate its sixty-fifth anniversary and its sponsorship of typographic excellence, the Type Directors Club has published Celebrate 65, a portfolio of inspirational work by prominent type designers, graphic designers, letterers, calligraphers, and artists from around the world.

The sixty-five contributors were invited to submit a design for one number between one and sixty-five.

I was assigned number "59".
Being always fascinated with Herb Lubalin's greeting card from '72, and how he managed to create symmetry from two visually unrelated numbers,
I was compelled to try the same.

HOW Magazine

Steven Heller and my book, Stop, Think, Go, Do, published by Rockport Publishers,
just got featured in the new September issue of HOW Magazine.

Metal Hurlant

Thanks to my friend Valnoir Artfield Lautrec,

I received yesterday from Paris 

Metal Hurlant  No. 57 from November 1980.

This is the first time that I have had this particular issue of this magazine in my hands.

In this issue I published my comic 

"On the Same Side", which later 

Metal Hurlant pronounced the most bizarre comics of the year. 

On the first reading, the comic doesn't 

make much sense, until one lifts the page against the light and figures out 

that the comic characters are printed/two dimensionally, and for them the third 

dimension (other side of the page) is a 

totally new dimension/science fiction.

Another Movie, Another Cover

Flying to Europe, I usually watch movies for which I wouldn't pay

a ticket to see, or just plainly missed them in theaters. Because of this

second reason, on one of my recent flights, I decided to watch 

The Ladykillers. First, because I saw the original and I really liked it and 

secondly because I enjoy movies by the Coen brothers. 

In one of the scenes toward the end of the movie, where Tom Hanks is opening 

a coffin that is supposed to be full of money, to his surprise he discovered that 

it is full of magazines. To my surprise, I discovered that one of the magazines 

was with my cover illustration. 

It was Mother Jones magazine from August 2002, art directed by Jane Palecek. 

The only thing I didn't understand was why Tom Hanks was so disappointed

with my cover.
