In 1918 Egon Schiele died from the Spanish Flu pandemic. He was 28 years old.

"Sometime in mid-October, Egon Schiele’s wife, Edith falls ill with the flu. She is 6 months pregnant and despite the desperate care from her husband Egon, she succumbs to the flu on October 28. Three days later, on October 31, Egon Schiele followed his wife and unborn child into the after world in the early hours of the day."

This comic is based exclusively on the photos of Egon before and after his death.

Modesty Blaise (Galley Slaves), Part 3, by Jim Holdaway

Sometimes one gets lucky. 

I managed to acquire another comic strip by of Modesty Blaise (Galley Slaves) from 1968 by Jim Holdaway. Now I have three consequential strips from the same episode.

I recently acquired this large (120x160cm / 47x63 inches) French poster for the movie SPYS from 1974 with an illustration by Moebius.

 

To Be Continued… Comics and visual culture in Croatia

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia has opened a very ambitious exhibition of Croatian comics titled To Be Continued… Comics and visual culture in Croatia.

"The exhibition To Be Continued… Comics and visual culture in Croatia sets the so-called Ninth Art of comic strips, cartoons and graphic storytelling in its European and international context, bringing together its history, evolution, and canonical authors. The exhibition examines the way in which perceptions of comics have changed over time, the role of comics in shaping popular and mass culture, and the professional and personal networks within which comics are created and find their way to the audience."

Modesty Blaise (Galley Slaves) by Jim Holdaway

I acquired these two comic strips of Modesty Blaise (Galley Slaves) from 1968 by Jim Holdaway not only because I had the unique chance to buy two sequential strips but also because of the drawing of the warship. Despite being painted as a minimalistic geometric abstraction, the warship is still completely realistic and convincing.
