Another proof that Tolerance is needed

The windows of the Human Rights House in Belgrade (Serbia), where the Tolerance exhibition is currently on display, were defaced by stickers of the nationalist right-wing party "Zavetnici." The stickers contain warning signs "Foreign Agents" and signs with a threat that this NGO institution will be closed on March 4th, after they win the elections in Serbia.

"Head to Toe" Uncovered

Steve Heller's and my new book Head to Toe: The Nude in Graphic Design, published by Rizzoli, will be released on April 17th 2018.

"This 312-page book investigates and illuminates a new generation of artists and the ways that they relate to one of art history’s most storied traditions: nude figure drawing and painting. It demonstrates the ways in which new mediums and new technologies are pushing graphic designers to previously untold heights of artistic representation, thereby cementing the graphic designer’s place alongside more traditional mediums in art history and criticism."

The book was designed by my studio. Cover and slipcase photography by Zeljko Koprolcec. Typography used in the book is Fedra Sans by Nikola Djurek (Typonine).

You can see more spreads from the book here: https://mirkoilic.com/head-to-toe/

Tribal Rip-off

In 2008, I got a call from Joseph Perez, at that time the art director of Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin USA. He was working on a new book, Tribes by Seth Godin, for which he needed a cover illustration. He remembered my The New York Times illustration from August 2006 for the article Into Africa, and suggested that I try to do something similar for this book. When the book got published it became an instant bestseller, and the book cover got reprinted in many countries and in many languages.

Now, 10 years later, to my total surprise I discovered that Penguin Press released a new book, not only with a similar title Political Tribes, but also with almost an identical cover illustration. I know many people did a similar kind of illustration, but it's more then coincidence. Is this fair? To piggyback ride on success of Seth Godin's Tribes book, in title and book design? I don't know what kind of deal they have with Seth Godin, but in case of the image, seems to me if they wanted to imitate my illustration it would be fair and logical to call me.

I imitate myself better then anybody else.

Op-Ed Pages in MoMA

I'm proud to announce that MoMA New York acquired eight of The New York Times Op-Ed pages for their collection (images not available yet), which I designed as the art director from 1992 to 1993.

Considering this eight Op-Ed pages as one piece of work, now I have 38 works in MoMA's collection.

Being the art director of Op-Ed pages, I had the pleasure of working with some of the top writers and illustrators. The editorial team, headed by Mike Levitas, supported me in creating some quite unusual pages, which were very "experimental" for The New York Times at that time.

Here are some of them.

Milton Glaser Posters Book

New, beautifully designed book Milton Glaser Posters, published by Abrams contains 427 examples of posters from 1965 to 2017.

I'm very proud that two of the examples are posters for projects on which Milton and I collaborated on, The Design of Dissent book and Tolerance poster show. I managed for a second to snatch from Milton the advance copy of the book and photograph the spreads with those two projects.

This 768-page book will be released on March 27, 2018.
