NYTimes' "The 40 Best Illustrations of 2025"

Every year The New York Times publishes thousands of illustrations.

At the end of the year, The New York Times art directors choose “The 40 Best Illustrations of 2025".

This year I have the honor of having my illustration for the article by Carl Zimmer “Mapping the Sense of What’s Going On Inside” as one of the 40 chosen illustrations. The illustration was art directed by Rodrigo Honeywell.

You can read and see a little more information about the illustration Mapping the Sense, here.

Lecture at the 11th International Triennial of Stage Poster

The four international judges of the 11th International Triennial of Stage Poster – Sofia 2025, Wiesław Grzegorczyk of Poland, Finn Nygaard of Denmark, Radoslava Boor of Bulgaria and Czechia, and I were invited to give a lecture to students and design professionals about our work. The lectures were held on the morning of Monday, December 15th, alongside the opening of the Triennial’s poster show. Unfortunately, Finn Nygaard, for personal reasons, wasn’t able to make it to the lectures.

The lecture is held in one of the exhibition rooms. This one was showing the work of the judges. Each judge had a wall to show their theater posters. In my case, I was represented by ten posters that I created for the JDP-Yugoslav Drama Theatre. I had the opportunity to explain the importance of using design work to promote activism and supporting causes you believe in through one’s artwork.

Mapping the Sense of What’s Going On Inside

I was pleased to see a very positive response from readers to my illustration in the The New York Times for Carl Zimmer's article on interoception. Usually, the comment section of articles doesn't comment much on the illustration, so I'm glad it resonated so much.

&TD Exhibition Video

I am pleased to share with you this video about an exhibition that I am apart of: "Design TV / Design for Teatar &TD 1964-1983: Arsovski, Bućan, Borčić, Ilić."

In this video from Dizajn TV, Marko Golub takes us through the story of graphic design for Teatar &TD and the synergy of an innovative theater and the exceptional design approaches of Mihajlo Arsovski, Boris Bućan, Željko Borčić and myself, who, one after the other, over 19 intense years, questioned what design means in the context of theater, but also what visual communications are and where their boundaries lie.

'The exhibition provides an overview of one of the most exciting creative series in the history of Croatian graphic design, the dynamic continuity of graphic design for the Chamber Stage and the &TD Theatre, which were created, one after the other, by Mihajlo Arsovski, Boris Bućan, Željko Borčić and I from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s.’ – Marko Golub and Dejan Kršić, Exhibition Curators

TD Theatre is a theatre in Zagreb, Croatia. It is regarded as one of the most important experimental Croatian theatres of the 20th century.

An "Epic" Collaboration

In 1978, I had a show of original drawings of my comics at the prestigious Lucca Festival in Italy. In three days of being there, I managed to meet and socialize with some of my comics idols: Joe Kubert, Dino Battaglia, José Antonio Muñoz, Bobby London, Les Lilley, Sergio Toppi, and Hugo Pratt. I also had the pleasure of meeting a few comics editors/publishers, among them Rick Marschall.

Soon after, in 1979, Rick founded a new magazine titled “Epic Illustrated,” published by Marvel Comics. In the first issue of the magazine, published in the Spring of 1980, he published three of my comics, and that’s how our collaboration started. Despite my 40-year hiatus from drawing comics, we’ve still stayed in touch over all this time.

“Mary Perkins, On Stage”

Recently, I acquired this slightly beaten-up and folded page from the comics “Mary Perkins, On Stage” by Leonard Starr from 1975. This is not his most exciting composition of the page, but his brushstrokes are exquisite. It’s amazing to see how easily he’s drawing all this.

The comic came with a vellum cover with a color break.

”Modern Times” Design Documentary

I am pleased to share with you this episode of the 2023 documentary television show “Moderna Vremena” (”Modern Times”) authored by Dubravko Merlić. The series aired in 2023, but I didn’t get this link to share it with you all until now. This is the sixth episode, dedicated to design in the 1980s in Croatia. The segment about my work begins at 30:50.

Unfortunately, the show is in Croatian, so my Croatian viewers will have to deal with being able to understand what I’m saying.
