My Work Celebrated in New York Times Op-Ed Retrospective

The New York Times is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year and posted an article online today about the history of the Op-Ed page, sharing the page's design milestones. The Op-Ed page is a newspaper’s home for opinion articles written by people other than the paper’s editors, ranging from subject matter experts to famous and noteworthy people. I’m very pleased that my work as an Art Director at The New York Times is among the page designs featured here.

“I was given the task of illustrating two Op-Ed articles about the Anti-Defamation League. One was in support of the organization, which had been founded to combat antisemitism and other forms of bigotry; the other took issue with its actions. It’s not easy to illustrate articles that represent opposing views on complicated topics without leaning into tropes.

I decided to approach the challenge through design, arranging the text into the positive and negative shapes of the Star of David while maintaining the paper’s traditional column grid. At the time, our art department had only a handful of Macintosh computers, making this a revolutionary approach.”
